Worse and worse

To you, my friends, I expose the soft underbelly of my big dragony body. If there's one thing all these stupid greeting cards reveal about me, it's that I have a giant weakness for puns. Bad ones, brilliant ones, they're all the same to me.

The "Shanks" girl is totally Michelle Pfeiffer in Grease 2. And holy crud, the "Wanks" boy is totally Rat Bastard from Hopeless Savages! I have no originality. Woe!

Rhoda Perdition Rides Again?

Surprise! Another Dig cover! I didn't find out until the day before they hit the stands. I hope I become famous for drawing horse butts. "Y'know, Ali Blackwell... The horse butt lady." Anyway, though, to quote my favorite movie, Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*cker!

Also, two of my greeting cards were accepted and will be included in Laura McFadden's art book, 1000 Handmade Greetings, put out by Rockport Publishing.

And finally, I think I've officially come out of roller derby retirement. I'm going to wait a little bit before changing my profile description, though, so as not to jinx it.

Behind the Scenes

Clockwise from top left: Original ink drawing, front page of portfolio proper, minifolio, minifolio interior (it worked out!), mini cover prior to folding, printout of line drawing colored with prismas. Note color swatches up top- I choose the colors before I start. For this I allowed myself a certain number of punch colors and the rest were all neutrals. Still, I ended up with a Lisa Frank pallette. Go, me!
Seriously, though, I went about this project completely half-cocked. Next time I'll choose a more standard size and lay out the interiors with some semblance of uniformity. Then maybe I won't end up with a gushing Exacto wound. : (

Over the Top

I banged this out today as a wraparound cover for mini-version portfolios I'm making to leave behind at portfolio reviews. I realize there are some technical issues here, but as it's a cover and not a "real" portfolio piece, I just let loose and have fun. Hopefully the joy comes across more strongly than the mistakes.

Now the real challenge is how to lay out the interior images so that they're organized... I don't know if I can do double-sided prints on my HP, so it'll be a complete hackjob, probably. Lately I've been perusing craft books that bill themselves as "punk-rock" or "DIY". I hate these terms. BUT. Maybe people will buy into it. DIY punk-rock minifolios.

In a recent interview, Siouxsie Sioux claims that punk isn't dead; it lives on as long as the attitude does. Well, Siouxsie, no one is wearing clear plastic raincoats and nipple tape anymore- They're making books on how to bedazzle old t-shirts. My face crumples into a teary mess.

Props!

Hey, everybody! I wanted to post another stupid card (market research- would you buy this?) and also give a shout-out to my bud Gabby, who just got into Spectrum! It's kind of a big deal... Visit the website!

Also, Jon, if you happen to catch this post: Would this have been a more satisfactory solution to the Kong assignment?

Cardsplosion!

The past few days have been INTENSE. I've spent my afternoons toiling away at many greeting cards (most of them thank-you notes) with the Barchester Chronicles DVD set on as background noise. BTW, Obadiah Slope (nee Slop) is odious indeed! I'll have to read the books soon; I bet they're hilarious.
Regretfully one card accidentally got sealed and addressed before I remembered to scan it, but I didn't want to waste a stamp. It was an Iron Man stamp! He's all the rage right now.
