During the Black Plague, rumors went around that the sickness was brought to households by a young woman with a red scarf- the "Plague Maiden"- and in one town, a man claimed to have fought her off with a sword. If I were a better artist I'd've drawn swollen bubos under her armpits, but I didn't.
